Managing health insurance

Health insurance is a type of insurance coverage that helps to pay for your health care services like doctor or therapy visits.  Even when you are not sick, health insurance pays for 'wellness' checks which can help you stay in tip-top health.  The good news is that there are many new ways to get covered.

Things to know:

  • There are new options for teens to maintain health insurance.
  • Medicaid expansion in Louisiana now includes coverage for youth age 19 and older - call Healthy Louisiana at 1-888-342-6207 for information
  • If you are working, there are health insurance plans through the federal government.  You may qualify for tax credits which can cover most of the premium (the cost of the insurance).
  • If your parents have health insurance through their work and it covers children, you can stay on their policy until age 26.
  • If you have a full-time job, most employers are required to offer health insurance.
  • Schools or colleges offer health insurance plans for students.
  • If you receive SSI because of a disability, your Medicaid coverage will continue after the age of 18

Your parent or guardian can help you explore your health insurance options.
